Bricks as the Backbone of the Construction Industry
The construction industry contributes to about 10% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), registering an annual growth of about 9%. Clay fired bricks form the backbone of the construction industry. The brick sector in India is tremendous in size and spread. India is the second largest brick producer in the world. It is continuously expanding on account of a rapid increase in demand for bricks in infrastructure and housing industries. In sync with chapter ‘Manufacturing Industries’ and knowing more about the brick making process, Class X students visited a nearby brick dome kiln and experienced the process of brick formation. The students interacted with the site in-charge of Brick kiln and gained knowledge about how Brick kiln works. They learnt about the various processes undertaken in the manufacture of bricks i.e., preparation of clay, Brick moulding, Drying, Burning, and familiarized themselves with different types and classes of bricks, cost, sources of raw material etc. The visit was successful in imparting practical knowledge about brick as a building material to the students.
